In contrast to the dull gray of numerous variants of the since 1953 manufactured Air Force “Hercs”, the approximately 40 variants of the US Coast Guard-operated HC-130s carry a flamboyant red and white livery. As such, they serve as official sea rescue airplanes (SAR) and helicopter refuellers but they have another function yet. The HC-130s are also used to detect drug-running airplanes and ships. especially from South America. The original of this model is registered as 1504, which is also the year the US Coast Guards’ was founded.

In 1964, the fighter-bomber squadron G31 “Boelke”, as the sibling formation of the air force’s G36, presented its latest airplane type, the F-104G “Starfighter”, at Hopsten air base in Münsterland, in northwest-Germany. It was the much-anticipated replacement for the totally obsolete F-84 “Thunderstreaks”. From 1968 on, a four-digit code, split by the stylistically modified cross of old provenance, was implemented. In the case of this model’s original it was 22+09. 52 machines were deployed at G31/36 until it was placed under NATO control in 1967. For ten years, the “manned rocket” remained in G31 operation. It, too, lost nine machines with six pilot fatalities due to the totally overburdened role the F-104 was forced to play. Our original is displayed in the gray-green combat livery, equipped with additional tanks at the wing ends which would even have qualified the jet, capable of reaching mach 2.2, for nuclear operations, under US command, into the potential combat zones in the GDR, Poland or the CSSR. A completely black painted, also called “Vandy One” F-14A, with which the test team VX-4 back then went public, caused a furor in 1990. It flew the “Black Bunny” on the tail unit, the logo of Playboy magazine as the VX-4 squadron’s emblem, which was erased from the airplanes after the so-called “Tailhook scandal” at the beginning of the 90s. The reason being to improve the Navy’s image after an incident in 1991, in which US Navy pilots sexually harassed female guests after excessive alcohol intake. The “Vandy One” model has been approved to carry the “Black Bunny” and will be released in two variants with the item number 550239 for the closed cockpit and 550314, in a limited edition of 1,000 items, for the open cockpit version. Over 5,000 planes type McDonnell F-4 Phantom II were manufactured from 1958 until 1979. The F-4J “Showtime 100“ gained special fame for its role in one of the most spectacular combat missions of the Vietnam War. On May 10, 1972, the pilot Randy Cunningham took off with his Radar Intercept Officer Willi “Irish” Dirscoll, with this Phantom in the special livery “Showtime 100” to bomb a north-Vietnamese railroad embankment. They indeed managed to shoot down three North-Vietnamese MiG-17 fighters but on their way back to the aircraft carrier USS Constellation, they themselves became victims of an attack. The pilots were able to rescue themselves but the airplane, an F-4J ACE with the registration 155800 flew less than one day in that special livery.

In July 1978 the European manufacturer Airbus began work on their second aircraft, the A310. It would be a medium-to long-range wide-body airliner based on the Airbus larger first aircraft the A300. The first flight of the A310 took place on April 3, 1982 with the first service flight in April 1983 with Lufthansa. In 1985 the A310-300 production began as a longer range version of the A310-200 and is capable of carrying an additional 15,430 pounds of fuel in its tail-plane. The last A310 was delivered in June 1998.


RCAF CC-150 Polaris is an Airbus A310-304 c/n 446 that was manufactured for Wardair of Canada. Its first flight took place on December 17, 1987 and was registered as C-GBWD. In January 1990 Wardair merged with Canadian Airlines with Wardair aircraft, including C-GBWD becoming the property of Canadian.
