However the engines were re-manufactured Wright R-1820-G5 that had been used in KLM DC-3 airliners. These planes were shipped in early 1942 but during transit Java surrendered so the Netherlands no longer needed the planes and they were diverted to Australia. None of the seventeen aircraft given to the RAAF ever saw air-to-air combat. The survivors were all returned to the USAAF 5th Air Force in early 1944, where they were scrapped.

On May 3, 1937 the No. 23 Squadron was formed and two years later was renamed No. 25 Squadron (City of Perth). Their original task was convoy close-support and anti-submarine patrols and later the defense of Perth. In August 1942 nine Brewster Buffalo arrived and one of the pilots was Sgt. John Charles Bailey. He survived the war and became a farmer and father of three. In early 1943 the Buffalo were moved to Dunreath and became part of No. 85 Squadron. A cut-down rear fuselage was mated with a teardrop canopy to give the pilot an all round better view. There were 957 of these aircraft produced.

Built by the Vickers Supermarine facility at Keevil around the end of 1944, this Spitfire Mk XIV had a construction number 6S/649205 and was assigned serial number MV 293 and somewhere along the way was registered as OI-C. It was stored by the RAF until early 1945. In February 1945 it was sent, from 33MU at RAF Lyneham, to India for use by Air Command Southeast Asia. Here it was loaned to the RIAF (Royal Indian Air Force) 8 Squadron October 15, 1945. May 12 1946 Officer SM Ahmed landed the aircraft with the tail wheel retracted. It became part of the IAF inventory December 12, 1947 and in 1949 went to the IAF Technical Training Centre (TTC) in Jalahalli where it was used as a ground instructional airframe with markings T-20. In 1978 the War Birds of Great Britain bought the plane and shipped it back in crates to the UK.
In 1978 the registration G-BGHB was saved for the aircraft but never used. But in 1979 the registration G-SPIT was assigned and after a lengthy restoration period the aircraft made its first fully restored flight on August 14 1992 wearing an all silver post WWII paint scheme. To accomplish this Grumman started to modify the 65th F3F-2 to F3F-3 standards with 26 more aircraft being produced as F3F-3. The modifications were comprised of an upgraded engine with a smaller diameter propeller and a modified cowling as well as small flaps and revised leading edges. The armament wasn’t changed. By the end of 1941 the entire operational biplane fleet was replaced but 117 were sent to various bases for training and transportation. The F3F-3 had two distinctions; it was the last of the USN biplanes as well as being the fastest carrier-borne biplane in the world.

The first F3F-1 was accepted on January 29, 1936. Throughout the 1930’s and early 1940’s military aircraft had some of the brightest and most colorful paint schemes. VF-7 was no different with this aircraft painted in the colors of its Commanding Officer on board the USS Wasp (CV-7). In September 1939 because of the outbreak of war in Europe, Neutrality Patrols were formed to seek out and track any war-like actions in Atlantic. At first aircraft such as the F3F-1 were one of those used for this purpose. Eventually were joined by 77 destroyers and mine-layers that had been in storage. Because they were part of a Neutrality Patrol the aircraft also carried additional national insignias on the forward fuselage. VF-7 was the last Navy Fighter Squadron to be equipped

<b

Detalii pe WhatsApp? Detalii pe Mess?

The Bf is the designator for the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW) (Bavarian Aircraft Works) that produced the original aircraft. In 1938 Messerschmitt took over BFW but throughout WWII German handbooks and documents referred to the aircraft as the Bf-109. By the end of 1939 the Bf-109E (Emil) had replaced all other 109 variants and equipped 13 Gruppens with 40 aircraft each. The Bf-109 was the main single-engine aircraft until the Fw-190 came along.

The Aircraft

In December 1939 Romania ordered 50 Bf-109Es, 11 delivered in 1940 and the remaining 39 arriving one year later. These aircraft equipped the new Grupul 7 Vanatoare in time for them to take part in operation Barbarossa. But by mid 1941 the group had lost aircraft and was withdrawn to be replenished with 15 used German Bf-109E-7s. The unit returned to the front in time for the Battle of Stalingrad. Grupul 7 had 8 aircraft captured by the Soviets including Bf-109E3 No. 9 “Hai Fetito” flown by Lt. loan Di Cesare who is credited with 16 victories.

Detalii pe WhatsApp? Detalii pe Mess?
